Afraid to Flip: A confidence building week.

On a few occasions as a kid I was taken to a gymnastics gym, usually for a friends birthday party. I always had a blast doing flips and tricks on the trampolines or into the foam pit. A gym would be the perfect place to learn a backflip, with padded floors, a spring board, and possibly somebody to give me advice. On Wednesday I began searching for local gyms, and when they had open gym times. After calling a few local gyms I realized that most don’t allow adults. The closest one that I could find with adult open gym was an hour away, with open gym on Monday and Tuesday. By now I had wasted most of my evening and it was necessary that I made some progress. Afraid To Flip: One week to land a backflip.

Unfortunately I did not end up posting this last night as expected. After working two doubles in a row, right at the beginning of my week, I haven’t made any progress on the backflip either. This week only has one rule; by Monday at 12:00 A.M. I will have the confidence to land a standing backflip on flat ground. Sounds like an easy challenge to me; I am more than confident that I have the physical ability to land a backflip. Although, every time I prepare I hit a mental roadblock, I am held back by some irrational fear that keeps me from even attempting. Over the remainder of this week my main objective is to break myself of this fear. Continue reading

One Week No Seat: Where is my seat?

Over the weekend I was sleeping in late and leaving the house as soon as I woke up. Saturday and Sunday were two very long days, without work to keep me occupied I had to stay as busy as ever. Most of my excitement for the challenge had faded and I was only driven by how close I was to completion. Unfortunately I woke up today still having to stand most of the day, because my desks both at work and home are still standing desks.

Beginning this week I was very happy with standing at work, I was more comfortable and getting more work done. Continue reading

One Week No Seat: Built to stand.

At the end of my second day of standing I am both exhausted and restless. My body knows that it is time to sleep, but at the same time my mind is still going full speed. I didn’t realize how much I depend on sitting down to relax. Over the past 2 days I have done my best to stay busy; cooking, cleaning, disc golf, soccer, anything I could find to keep me from wanting to sit. Even while writing this I continue to catch myself fidgeting and pacing. If I ignore the desire long enough I might forget about sitting, or I might have to sell my couch.

One Week No Seat: Can I stand it?

No need for a chair

Broken Lawn Chair

For many years I worked as a full-time waiter, spending hundreds of 8 to 10 hour shifts on my feet. While working this job I was thankful for any opportunity to sit for a minute and rest. When I began working a nine to five desk job I was excited to sit while working, surely it must be easier than constantly walking in circles. Although, it didn’t take long to realize how uncomfortable eight hours of sitting could become. Continue reading

Weekly Endeavor: A new adventure starts every monday.

Welcome to Weekly Endeavor, where you are invited to follow along as I push myself to complete weekly challenges. At the beginning of each week I will introduce a new challenge, go over the rules, and cover any thoughts or concerns I have regarding the task. You can expect regular updates which will include my progress, whether positive or negative, as well as any information or new insight I have about the current endeavor. These tasks will include learning new skills, others will challenge me to endure one week without giving up.

This idea came about when I was told of a stand up computer desk and decided to try it out. I used an old night stand to elevate my monitor at work and was determined to last one 8 hour day without sitting. Continue reading
